Introduction:
Meaning of performance
appraisal: Performance appraisal is
the systematic evaluation of the performance of employees and to understand the
abilities of a person for further growth and development. Performance appraisal
is generally done in systematic ways which are as follows:
- The supervisors measure
the pay of employees and compare it with targets and plans.
- The
supervisor analyses the factors behind work performances of employees.
- The
employers are in position to guide the employees for a better performance
Objectives of Performance Appraisal
Performance Appraisal can be done
with following objectives in mind:

To maintain records in order to
determine compensation packages, wage structure, salaries raises,
etc.

To identify the strengths and
weaknesses of employees to place right men on right job.
- To maintain and assess the
potential present in a person for further growth and development.
- To provide a feedback to
employees regarding their performance and related status.

- To review and retain the
promotional and other training programmes.
Process of the performance appraisal:
The performance appraisal consist some of the steps i.e

Planning Phase:
In this phase the organisation set the mutually
agreed goals and guidelines for employee evaluation. It also determine the key
objectives for measuring success in the position and set developmental goals to
encourage greater productivity and results.

Performance Phase:
This is the longest phase that allows the
employee to meet goal and objectives, develop new skills and track
accomplishments or setbacks in the system throughout the process. Managers are
reviewing performance and making notes as well.

Assessment Phase:
Employees are given an opportunity near the
end of the performance cycle to provide feedback on the preset goals,
competencies and objectives to deliver to their manager. This is when the
manager will document feedback on the employee performance as well. The system
allows senior managers to review all submitted documentation and sign off
before the actual review is complete. In other words we can say in this phase
actual performance of employees is compared with the set standards in order to
find out any deviation.

Review Phase:
Manager and employee sit down together to
discuss the year in review. The corrective steps should be taken in case of any
deviation. Reviews can be presented online or printed and e-signature that the
review took place can be captured in the system to protect the organization if
legal review should occur.
